How Pulling out of COP21 Could Be a Huge Favor to Climate Engagement

Now More Than Ever People unite for a cause. In 2004 when a tsunami hit southeast Asia, people came together, donating unprecedented amounts of money to support first aid and humanitarian work. When terrorists attacked the office of Charlie Hebdo, murdering several journalists, people across the world came together to demonstrate solidarity. Meeting the 2-degree […]

ViralPolitics: Harnessing Social Media to Engage the Next Generation

Young people represent an important stakeholder group in the Transatlantic Relationship. The issues relevant to young people (aged 18-29) tend to be increasingly global and diverse, ranging from online privacy to climate change. Addressing these challenges requires greater cooperation between institutions on both sides of the Atlantic. Democracies run from the bottom up. They require […]

Online, on the Go, on Top

The backbone of the transatlantic relationship is business and trade, therefore to improve communication and engage new players, the goal must be expanding the trade relationship between the United States, Germany and the rest of Europe. However, as the stalled Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations have shown, it is crucial that cultural differences […]

Transatlantic Podcast – Exchange Ideas and Develop Solutions

Perception oftentimes does not represent reality. For instance people who were taking refuge in Germany in the past two years have had a great share of representation in the media, but their collective experience of fleeing a country and migrating to a safe place became their dominant marker. The diversity of the group and, even […]

New Times, New Ways

The transatlantic partnership, despite recent setbacks remains the most vital relationship for the Western countries on both sides of the Atlantic and the central column of the West’s stability and significance in the modern globalized world. This essay aims at presenting some recommendations on how to reshape the narrative of this cooperation and how to […]

Engaging Young People in Transatlantic Relations Online

“Americans try German food for the first time”. This title of a Buzzfeed with a simple concept video drew over 13.8 million views on Youtube. While other online platforms get a lot of buzz, Youtube is the most used online platform for teens, with 91% using the platform according to a National Cyber Security Alliance/Microsoft […]

Can YouTube Videos Get Younger People Interested in American-German Relations?

Traditionally, public policy viewpoints are written in essay form. However, many laypeople cannot easily access, or do not have expertise or patience to read long documents. YouTube videos can modernize German-American relations, especially among the younger generation. Easily-digestible videos have several advantages over essays. One, these videos are more likely to be watched, than essays […]

Using Trumps Favorite Tools of Communication for a New Narrative

When President Trump tweeted “We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military. Very bad for U.S. This will change” on May 30th, transatlantic communications hit an all time low, both diplomatically and grammatically. Instead of trying to understand the other or at least […]

#strongertogether: A (Social) Media Campaign for Transatlantic Unity

When it comes to Germany and the United States, one cannot help but acknowledge a shift towards a more reserved relationship between the two countries’ people, especially within the last couple of years. In both countries there is the narrative of a divide growing between both nations’ beliefs and expectations, the way they see the […]

Small Steps Go a Long Way: Consolidating Information to Engage the Public

As the Western world is buffeted by a rising tide of populism, the traditional transatlantic relationship between the United States and Germany is being called into question. Disparate interests and philosophies have sown discord among once stable allies, and disagreement between national governments has placed transatlantic cooperation in an increasingly fragile state. As the last […]

About

Atlantic Expedition is a fellowship program aiming to empower a younger and more diverse generation of leaders in transatlantic relations.

The Atlantic Expedition is currently in its second round. After fellows of the first Expedition developed policy recommendations and created the Atlantic Memo “Transatlantic Relations in a New Era: The Next Generation Approach”, participants of the second Expedition joined forces to develop new strategies for communicating transatlantic relations to a diverse audience and consequently making the transatlantic relationship a more inclusive endeavor.

From 9-14 October, fellows of the second Atlantic Expedition traveled to Chicago and Houston to present and discuss their ideas and proposals with representatives from politics, media, business and civil society. They published their recommendations in a second Atlantic Memo titeled “Atlantic Expedition II: Towards a More Inclusive Transatlantic Partnership” .

To stay up-to date, virtually join the expedition and to add your voice to the discussion, please find us on facebook and twitter.
