How to Make Use of the Trumpification of the Transatlantic Relations

Now more than ever, it has become evident that the transatlantic relations must not be taken for granted. Since the new U.S. president has taken office, unpredictability and unsteadiness has been the new policy strategy of the United States. At the same time, the European countries are still in crisis mode and are more concerned […]

Using Technology and Leadership to Propel German-American Relations into the Future

As the mid-point of 2017 approaches, shifts in the international landscape illuminate the importance of globalization and interdependency. It is no secret: For better or worse, our world is becoming more connected. As such, it is essential for two international powerhouses, the United States and Germany, to strengthen their transatlantic relationship. Both nations shoulder the […]

Government Consultations & Civil Society Dialogue: Creating Synergies

A way to rebuild the US-German relations The US-German relations go through a hard period nowadays. Since the NSA spy scandal in 2013, the discord between the German and US government is at a low point. However, the spy scandal was not that challenging neither for the US government nor for the German government. Both […]

Gaming – a Possibility to Connect Young People across the Atlantic

One thing I notice regularly in Germany is that video gaming is not very popular in German politics. Games are even considered as dangerous for the youth, the conservatives tend to call many of them “Killergames” and they are seen as a productivity killer and a waste of time. Only the rather small “Piratenpartei” openly […]

Get out of Your Comfort Zone – 5 Steps to Reinvigorate Transatlantic Relations

Ladies and gentlemen, “I need not tell you [.] that the world situation is very serious. […] I think one difficulty is that the problem is one of such enormous complexity that the very mass of facts presented to the public by press and radio make it exceedingly difficult for the man in the street […]

Talking with Each Other Instead of Talking about Each Other

During the first half of 2017, it became blatantly clear that the US and most European countries seem to drift in different directions. The great divide is visible to even the most inattentive observer. But most experts aren’t surprised. The tectonic shift began earlier. If we take a close look at the eight years before, […]

Transatlantia in the Time of Trump

The election of Trump awoke a generation Social activists united across nations But as the clamoring grew louder and louder Leaders shut the shades on their ivory towers   Identity, security, gone with the wind “O’hara never paid for her privileged sins” “Centuries of servitude justified by science – Eugenics spread to Germany thanks […]

Using Trumps Favorite Tools of Communication for a New Narrative

When President Trump tweeted “We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military. Very bad for U.S. This will change” on May 30th, transatlantic communications hit an all time low, both diplomatically and grammatically. Instead of trying to understand the other or at least […]

#strongertogether: A (Social) Media Campaign for Transatlantic Unity

When it comes to Germany and the United States, one cannot help but acknowledge a shift towards a more reserved relationship between the two countries’ people, especially within the last couple of years. In both countries there is the narrative of a divide growing between both nations’ beliefs and expectations, the way they see the […]

It’s the Communication, Stupid!

When mentioning US-German and transatlantic relations these days, the one audience where as a reaction you will still get sparkles in their eyes and not eye-rolling is that of young people. I contribute that to the globalization and internationalization of the younger generation via the internet: They no longer only watch the same movies and […]

About

Atlantic Expedition is a fellowship program aiming to empower a younger and more diverse generation of leaders in transatlantic relations.

The Atlantic Expedition is currently in its second round. After fellows of the first Expedition developed policy recommendations and created the Atlantic Memo “Transatlantic Relations in a New Era: The Next Generation Approach”, participants of the second Expedition joined forces to develop new strategies for communicating transatlantic relations to a diverse audience and consequently making the transatlantic relationship a more inclusive endeavor.

From 9-14 October, fellows of the second Atlantic Expedition traveled to Chicago and Houston to present and discuss their ideas and proposals with representatives from politics, media, business and civil society. They published their recommendations in a second Atlantic Memo titeled “Atlantic Expedition II: Towards a More Inclusive Transatlantic Partnership” .

To stay up-to date, virtually join the expedition and to add your voice to the discussion, please find us on facebook and twitter.
